Stage 1 Complete: FMC Margaret Tobin Centre Expansion

The first stage of this transformative project delivered a purpose-built mental health facility seamlessly connected to the existing structure of the Margaret Tobin Centre at Flinders Medical Centre.

The development included the construction of a new 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and admission facilities, enabling the transition from the existing 8-bed PICU into a larger, modern and purpose-designed environment for secure psychiatric intensive care.

Every aspect of the new unit was carefully designed to support safer, more dignified and patient-centred care. The facility features a home-like layout with private ensuite bedrooms, shared dining and lounge areas, and central courtyards that promote comfort, connection and wellbeing.

A calming, low-stimulus environment was achieved through the integration of natural light and thoughtful sensory design principles. Purpose-built spaces for counselling, interviews and family engagement further support therapeutic care and recovery, while centralised staff areas and technology-enabled monitoring improve visibility, safety and operational efficiency throughout the unit.

The completed facility provides a contemporary healing environment that enhances both patient experience and clinical care outcomes.
