The Ngutungka Henley Library and Community Centre Redevelopment project represents a transformative redevelopment that seamlessly merges the library with the community centre, resulting in a modern, multi-functional hub designed to foster greater community connection and social inclusion. Situated on the historic town hall site, the $11 million project has been made possible by the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant Program, with additional contributions from the local council, including asset sales.
The name "Ngutungka," meaning "place of knowledge" in the Kaurna language, reflecting the project’s goal of creating a central gathering place for the community. The redevelopment revitalises the State Heritage-listed town hall, blending the rich history of the site with modern facilities that cater to the diverse needs of the community. The design celebrates shared experiences, with a focus on community gathering, reflection, and connection. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape, the building envelope mimics the protective form of sand dunes, offering shelter while inviting interaction within.
The project involved the demolition of the existing library and constructing a new, purpose-built facility adjacent to the Town Hall. The new space includes seven versatile activity spaces, including a community kitchen, meeting rooms, an upgraded office for the Henley Historical Society, a changing places facility and an undercover outdoor area. These spaces support a wide range of activities and community programs, ensuring that the facility remains dynamic and adaptable to the evolving needs of locals. The library features an extensive collection of resources, further cementing its role as a vibrant centre for learning, collaboration, and social engagement.
The project also included a major refurbishment of the 1922 Town Hall, ensuring it met modern standards while preserving its heritage value. Significant upgrades to the lower ground areas have improved both functionality and accessibility. A notable addition to the hall was the installation of large, operable glass walls and new technology to enhance its versatility, complemented by custom-designed historical graphics.
With a commitment to sustainability, the new building incorporates carbon-neutral concrete, reducing its environmental impact. The facility is fully electric and features a 50kW solar panel system, generating renewable energy to power the building. Flexible design principles ensure the space can adapt to future community needs, while natural ventilation and a large PV array help reduce the building's carbon footprint.
In addition to the building works, the project included revitalisation of the nearby laneway, integration of a new carpark, installation of advanced audio-visual and evacuation systems, stormwater management improvements, landscaping, and the installation of wayfinding signage throughout the facility. Roof plant upgrades were also carried out to ensure long-term efficiency.
Ngutungka Henley stands as a beacon of heritage and innovation, creating a unified community space for Henley Beach and Grange. The integration of public services, such as the RSL, ensures a connected and active public destination, enriched by the surrounding coastal precinct. The redevelopment represents a forward-thinking investment in the community’s future while honouring its past.
