The Good Shepherd Lutheran School project was a two-storey extension to an existing GLA Building, which included the refurbishment of existing GLA’s, a new GLA and Withdrawal space and an open plan Mezzanine space. The existing undercover courtyard was completely removed to make way for the new extension. Existing internal masonry walls were replaced with full height aluminum windows to provide for more natural lighting. The internal solid oak stairs and curved bench seat are a feature which look out to the new courtyard and play space at the centre of the elliptical ramp. The ramp provides a DDA compliant access to the mezzanine space, while also acting as an external feature to the building.

Access was one of the challenges that we had to overcome, as we were not able to gain access to the external area by way of crossing over the oval. The majority of access was through the building, but where this was not possible, we had to crane over the top of the building, including the craning of an excavator over the building in order to dig the footings. Working within the school and adjacent occupied areas was another challenge as we had to minimise the impact to the operations of the school, was still trying to continue with our works.
