The redevelopment of the WCH Medical Day Unit and Renal Dialysis Unit was undertaken within a vacant space of the hospital and included the strip out and demolition of existing ward facilities, removal of asbestos and the construction of a new facility with capacity for 18 treatment spaces as well as staff facilities, various admin and consulting areas as well as public spaces. The scope included new medical gas facilities, negative pressure isolation spaces and relocation and upgrade to the existing RO water infrastructure critical to treatment of renal patients.

The project was carried out within the existing hospital requiring detailed staging and co-ordination of work occurring in adjacent occupied spaces to ensure no impact on hospital operation. Under floor services required building activity to take place in wards and treatment areas below the site. In addition, there was works associated with the RO water supply that had to be undertaken within the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit while the unity continued to function with major considerations made for dust and infection control.

The execution of the project required a close working relationship with end users, particularly clinicians and treating staff whose input was instrumental to the final design. Mossop worked with the WCH project team in developing critical works plans for tasks in occupied areas and where services impacting areas outside the site zone were interrupted. In addition, there was a co-ordinated approach to client requests for amendments to the original scope resulting from ongoing review of the works in progress and consultation with the end users.
