Mossop were engaged by RPS Adelaide on behalf of Adelaide Community Healthcare Alliance Inc. (ACHA) to deliver the new Memorial Hospital Main Works project located in North Adelaide, SA.

The multi-stage development comprised of six separable portions and the refurbishment of existing areas within the hospital in which adjacent spaces were in use including sensitive areas such as theatre wards. The sensitive areas were required to maintain sterile conditions for the existing facility.

The services included new electrical transformers, new site main switchboard, new generator set, distribution boards, new chillers, and air-conditioning/c systems.

Works included upgrading the existing theatre suite, upgrading of 40-50 ward rooms, the construction of a new theatre and paediatric day unit, and staff amenities.

Working closely with the hospital and maintaining continual, superior communication was of upmost importance to ensure its existing function was not comprised in any way. This extended to the coordination of deliveries and loading / unloading of materials.

Major achievements of the project included no Lost Time Injuries, the mitigation of high-risks with existing services in an operating 24/7 sensitive environment, delivering works without interruption to the hospital and achieving high-level quality of finishes.

Mossop worked in partnership with the consultant team to identify and resolve numerous latent conditions discovered during the build, for example.

  • Passive Fire rating details between existing buildings and between existing floor levels;
  • Footing redesign based on soil testing and post tender investigative demolition works under the 100+ year old building, and;
  • Functional design and staging of major plant room mechanical refurbishment in an operational environment.

A high level of client satisfaction was achieved stemming from our willingness to vary construction staging to provide the best outcome for the operational needs of the hospital. Every effort was made to minimise the impact of works to both the hospital and its commercial and residential neighbours. Open consultation directly with the end users enabled us to work side by side staging works around surgical and patient needs.

The Client was very pleased with the efforts of all concerned to provide a defect free build at handover. This was achieved by a process of close supervision during the build process to identify and eliminate issues as they arose.
